The northern spiral staircase leads to the basement. After exiting the stair room the basement opens up into one large room with two open side rooms. In the side rooms, and against the back wall, lay racks for keeping and aging whine. No whine exists now. Just a few empty jugs and the rotting racks themselves. In the middle of the basement lays a sunken area; declined about one foot. There are small troughs through out the basement that lead to this area. During floods, this area would fill up first with water so that the whine and racks would not get flooded and occupants could have time to save their beverages. During the hot and dry season the sunken area becomes a cool place to relax from the heat of the outer world. The basement has been restricted to Mothers and Cubs only. Warriors, Healers, Messengers, Guards, and Converters are not to enter this area unless advised to protect them.
