There were no defensive parents to meet Fallen Ember's approach from the juniper tree. There was only the sharp wing-whistle of a mourning dove as it retreated from a nearby perch, and the scattering of a few sparrows upon the raptor's approach. The nest, and the two eggs inside, could be easily reached.
Cedar's presence elicited more of a response, however. Before the big eagle could find a sturdy bough to land on, a black shape rushed him from a nearby spruce. Belting out a furious alarm cry, a crow dove against his back, tearing out a few feathers before circling away. "Not today, eagle! I'll pluck you bald before you reach one of our eggs!"
