Sanguine Lake, so named for its blood-red water, sits at the base of the Ochotona Mountains. The lake is filled with toxic red algae, giving it the deep, murky reddish color. This algae can be deadly to humans and animals, but seems to nourish some plants, leaving the grass around it lush and green. A sign near the lake warns anybody who passes not to go within 70 feet of the water due to the toxin's extreme danger. A fence was apparently put up long ago, but it is now weak or even broken in some places, making it easier for anybody daring enough to get closer to the deadly red water. Symptoms from exposure to the toxin include:
- Eye irritation and long-term vision loss
- Memory loss
- Narcosis ("drugged" effect)
- Severe cognitive impairment/confusion (can't remember their name, where they live, etc)
- Kidney and liver dysfunction
- Respiratory problems and upper respiratory irritation
- Acute skin burning (in direct contact with the toxin)
- Immune system problems
- Skin rash, legions and irritation
- Gastrointestinal problems (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps
- Headaches
- Muscle craps
- Irritability and mood swings
- Impaired brain power and motor skills.
