The dappled shade of the trees had been a blessing for weeks now. Summer's heat had reached a crescendo leaving grasses and leaves sun-scorched where the bright ball of light could reach. Ferns and branches bounced in the cooled by shade breeze, birds picked away at bugs and fluttered away to the canopy. A singular crow called from the deeper parts of the wood, warning a pesky raccoon to not get too close.
The smell of dust permeated the breeze, dry and aching to the nostrils. Flies buzzed around the partially eaten finch.
Through the brush, a large rich bay mare pulled at the leaves of a berry bush long past harvest time. Her black tail tangled and matted with thin twigs and leaves. Dried dust ran across her flanks.
The bay mare had refused to leave this territory since the old band had split. She would stay here likely til the end of her days. Her thick unusually cresty neck stretched out to pull at the far end of the bush.
"Come now Plum." The mare partially turned her head to glance at the filly slowly ambling behind her. "You'll need to try solids sooner or later." Her tail swished lazily, batting away an annoying fly from her hocks.
She pushed past a thick tangle of vines to give the filly more room, shaking her thick black mane. Forcing air through her nostrils she lifts her head to catch any strange scents, sensing none she watches the little bay dun pinto closely.
