They haul in the small metal cage and set it on the ground, a few yards from the gate. Then they remove the blanket, open the cage door, and quickly exit the territory and lock the gate. The humans watch and wait for Peregrine to get out.

Freedom! That's what Peregrine thought as he shot out of the cage. Sure, there was the human scent all around, but he could only see two fences. Ahead of him, the wilderness expanded beyond his gaze. So that's where he took off towards, and headed for the Pebble Pond.
