She had no problem with king or the herd but she missed her best friend everyone in her herd was older then her. **Kkep up you two** she said to svi and zeifer who were four months now
Svi followed liking the adventure
Zeifer ** we should of told dad mom he's going to worry till we return**
It had been Daga today that first noticed the family a short time after they'd entered the territory. He'd quickly doubled back through the forested mountains to alert Onok, and bring the big stallion along to intercept these interlopers.
With the young whitetail deer pacing a few dozen yards behind, it was the chocolate and white stallion that first officially approached the trio. He gave a brazen neigh first, to catch their attention and alert the rest of the herd about these not so strange strangers. "Kacheska, if I'm not mistaken?" He called out, his tones firm but not unwelcoming. He was always happy to see a new mare, and as with Coltrane, he was accepting of foals and younglings not of his own blood, for the sake of expanding and strengthening his own herd. "What brings you to our home?"
For the moment she had been hoping to only bump into her mother and sister. She wasn't sure yet if she would try to stay. She still saw Onok as foolish. And she didn't want to take King's foals from him especially since zeifer was to be heir. She internally cursed when it was Onok and a deer who found her first. **To visit my friend and sister** was her response. She really wished her sister joined kings herd. She was torn. It hurt. That her sister seemed to choose Onok over her. But she could only try to convince her.
Zeifer froze as a stallion approached his ears went back. ** Mom we can't be here!** He exclaimed. Not trying to hide his words or his disdain for another stallion that was not in their herd.
Svi watched the stallion and whisper** dad going to be mad**
Xena had heard them and slowly so savannah could keep up she headed that way with her twins
Onok was already nervous at Kacheska's presence, because he knew what it would mean if King tracked her all this way. Despite a million thoughts racing through his head though, the chocolate-faced stallion remained outwardly calm and listen to her and her young ones with patience, waiting for them to speak before he answered back, "I don't know that King will be happy about it, but you are certainly welcome to our home." To Zeifer, Onok snorted softly, his eyes going gentle, "It's quite alright, little one. You're safe in my realm. There are others here that you can play with, even."
And sure enough, Xena was approaching with her foals, moving at a pace that Savannah could keep up with.
Callaquioa was not far behind, guiding her two surviving foals. As soon as she saw her friend, she tossed her head back and whinnied in sheer delight, "Kacheska!" The young mare pranced forward to touch muzzles with her front, "Oh, I'm so happy to see you again! And look at them!" She beamed down at Zeifer and Svripa, "Brennik, Thor, come meet your cousins."
Brennik was already trotting after his mother, his eyes set wide with curiosity on his bald face.
Daga had moved off towards the trees now, giving the herd some space.
Kacheska knew the risk this put on Onok but personally she didn't actually care. to her he stole her family instead of doing the right thing and staying within a strong stallions home. But she'd never voice this to her sister. Her sister made her choice.
Xena led them forward moving to nuzzle her eldest and introducing the two young ones.
Zeifer snorted OUr home is better, safer and has another to play with. He said with a snort. He stomped a hoof as he watched the others come up. He was curious. But he stayed by his mother. Mom I want to go home where its safeHe said. He was nipped but that was the only response he got.
Svi eyed the four other foals warily staying by her mother as well but more out of shyness then anything.
Savannah eyed them and wobbled toward them.
Loki snorted. Please you'd probably like it here betternot that he actually knew what this colts place looked like.
The lack of response from Kacheska told Onok all he needed to hear, and he decided it was best just to let the young mare interact with her mother and sister. That left him to answer the spunky little foal, which he did with a chuckle and ears pricked forward in curiosity, "Is that so? I'm sure your father does a fine job keeping you safe. I don't think I see a scrape or scar on you."
Brennik observed his two cousins while his half-brother was quick to engage with Zeifer. After a moment he added his bold but quiet voice to the affair, backing up Loki as he now eyed Kacheska's son, "I think he's a scaredy-cat."
Calla turned and ear back and gave her son a nudge, "Be nice, Brenn." When she raised her dial again, the foals' words did linger on her mind, and she couldn't help but notice that Kacheska seemed a bit distant in responding to her herd, "Is everything okay, sis? Are you.. thinking about staying? It would be so nice to have you here, and our foals could grow up together."
Onok glanced uncertainly to Calla, but said nothing. Of course he'd love nothing more than to have Kacheska in the herd, but he knew that King's wrath would rain down on them if it came to that. True to his word, Onok would not force any mare to stay against their will, but he would fight tooth and hoof to protect them if they did decide to stay.
Her ears go back at Calla words. She wanted to. our foals would only see blood shed if I did, King will come and he will fight Onok. Onok won't win and even if he did Majesty would then fight him. I doubt you want to see blood shed. She said. This could of all been different had Onok chosen the right thing, to be a lead stallion but share Kings land like King offered. But he chose to steal her sister and because of that her mother chose to stay with Calla. She wouldn't voice that though.
Zeifer snorted .Come say that to my face punkhe said .
Svi just snorted as they bickered .You be wrong my brother is brave and kind. He is going to be the next lead stallion of our herdShe said.
Xena listened to them. She like her daughter thought that was the best coarse of action but Onok was headstrong and refused it. They nearly lost Nightshade because of it and did loose another deer later on. To her neither of those fights were wins for them. She remained silent though.
Callaquioa frowned at the thought, her view of King skewing quite differently than her sisters, thanks to the one time she'd seem him and Majesty. "You don't have to live under his hoof, Onok would protect you from him. He's not a bully, and he wouldn't force you to stay here or do anything you didn't want." She claimed emphatically, "Plus we have a new stallion in the herd, and my friend Daga has joined us."
The words unsettled Onok, because he wondered if Kacheska wasn't so far from the truth. His father was loyal to King, and he wouldn't be entirely surprised if the pair turned on him if one of their mares came to his herd. Fighting cats was one thing, but fighting his own blood didn't sit well in the stallion's heart. Sweeping these concerns aside, he addressed the two mares, "I'd support whatever decision you make, Kacheska. I don't mind you coming to visit us, though I know King is paranoid about predators, so I'm not sure he'd be happy about it. If you do choose to stay here, know that I will protect you and your foals."
With Callaquioa now distracted with her sister, Brennik stood up beside Thor and stared unabashed into his cousin's eyes, "You are a scardey-cat." For emphasis, the colt stuck his tongue out and pinned his ears back.
She snorted King doesn't force things he only protects whats his He is no bully. Do not insult King I have not spoken what I think of Onok so do your best to not speak ill of King as King only does what any stallion does to keep mares. He just firmer and more experianced then Onok isShe said. She snorted at Onok. No offense but you would loose to them so to say you'd protect me is a bit foolishShe said.
Zeifer snaped at Brennik face. I could kick your butt easilyHe snorted. I'm not afraid of anythingHe said.
Svi ears were back as Brennik spoke. I t hink your headstrong and should learn mannersShe snorted.
Xena on the other hand was watching the two colts and she nipped Brennik. Brennik enoughShe said.
"He reminds me too much of dad." Callaquioa answered back, but her tone had gone softer now. Kacheska seemed to be as loyal to her stallion as Calla was to Onok, and she could understand that desire to defend his honor. "Lets not waste time on arguing, how about I show you around? Have you seen the ocean yet?" Her voice perked as she said this, recalling the time she first laid eyes on the endless body of water, and wanting to share that awe with her half-sibling. If there time was to be short together, she was bound determined to enjoy it.
Onok's dark ears were working to keep track of the various conversations going on, swiveling from the foals to Kacheska, and occasionally out to the trees where Daga and Nightshade kept tabs on the surroundings. Somewhere nearby, Harthrou lurked as well. To Kacheska, he nodded, "You just let me know what your desires are Kacheska. You're welcome to visit or stay, no stallion should force you to do what you don't want."
Brennik had nipped back at his cousin, brazenly clipping his teeth at the other's soft nose. He then shied away Xena's own nip, squealing in protest at the reprimand, "He started it, Xena! It's not my fault he's a wussy."
"If I may-" From a nearby thicket where he'd quietly extricated himself, Daga spoke up, "I can entertain the foals while the adults talk?"
She snorted. If you stayed you would of seen he is nothing like fatherShe said. She looked to Onok He does not force me to do anything, he only protects and cares and knows how to do thatShe said.
Xena snorted No you started it by calling names. show some respect BrennikShe said. She looked to Daga as much as she appreciated the deer. Onok will stay with you while you do so and go to Darkia and Harthor so they aren't far if something were to come upShe said.
Loki snorted at his brother. I think your just pushing out your own traitsHE said.
Savannah snorted. Your sooo rude BrennikSh said.
Thor had nothing to say.
Zeifer snorted at Brennik. the only wussy I see here is youhe said standing tall now.
Svi just sighed.Boyswas all she said.
When her invitation was ignored, Calla shuffled a forehoof anxiously against the ground and reluctantly came back to the topic of the stallions, with a voice that was quiet and uncomfortable, "He harried and nipped at you, and kept you separate from your family even though you wanted to be with us. He doesn't even let us visit." She glanced to her children then, catching word of an argument, but Xena seemed to have it under control, so she looked back to her half-sister. "Please, I don't want to argue. I love Onok, he's kept as all safe and gave us beautiful children, and I don't know why you're all so against him for that."
Brennik could handle the rebuff from these cousins he didn't know, and let Xena's reprimand slide off his back, but when Loki turned on him after he'd tried to have his back, and his sister chastised him, his mood sank. "I don't have time to argue with colts that are scared of our land. I'd rather explore with Daga." He announced, trotting away from Loki and towards Thor.
Daga bowed his antler-less head as he vowed to his lead mare, "Of course. I don't plan on going beyond hearing range of any of them." He then looked to the foals, ,b>What do you all say to a challenge? I'll pick an item for you to find, and the first one to find it gets a prize."
He snorted he turned his attention to the deer. ** That challenge seems biased to the ones who know this land** he said with a snort
Loki just sighed at his twin but followed
The other foals followed
Kacheska snorted ** he only did what a strong stallion would do calli. I wouldn't be against Onok had he done the smarter thing and lived a long side king as his equal where you all would of been protected** she said softly as she'd make to follow her sister
Xena snorted at the foals. ** Enough talk about the stallions**
"Onok only did what a normal stallion would do, he started a family." Callaquioa challenged back, albeit in a soft voice that dreaded conflict. Passion for her protector drove her to continue though, and a bit of emotion crept into her gentle voice as she added, "It's not natural for a grown stallion to stay with his family for so long and share his mares. And he's protected us twice now, and we killed one of the predators - he knows what he's doing, and I don't like that you guys are constantly treating him like a colt and disrespecting him."
Onok didn't take part in this conversation, letting the mares discuss their feelings among themselves. He'd tried again and again to prove himself to the others, and when that failed to change their minds, he'd focused solely on protecting them and doing his best to keep the herd happy and healthy. To that end, he trotted from Calla and Kacheska, and towards Daga and the tiny army of foals the young buck was trying to enthrall, "Did I hear there was a scavenger hunt? How about this; we can go down to the beach and see who can find the most unique shell? The tide washes new ones in every day, so it'll be fair for everyone."
Brennik looked up to his dad, then to Daga, pointedly ignoring the colt that was whining about fairness, "What kind of shells will we be looking for?"
This is where Daga chipped in again, "Any and all shells. It can be a colorful one, big or small, or unique looking. It'll be up to each of you to pick what you think is the best one."
She snorted at this. perhaps but it would of been wiser for him to stay till he found a second stallion to help guard two pregnant mares one stallion, never a good thing thats why are father died not that it matters that he diedShe said with a snort then just followed her mother and calli.
Xena snorted. No one is disrespecting him he just should of made wiser choices in the beginning for our safety and don't go counting that as a win we lost in both of those fights in the long run and night almost died in the first and a deer did dieshe said. we didn't fend the cats off they took their kill and left because they aren't sport huntersShe said as she led them around.
Zeifer didn't like brennik. Sounds like a girly thing to doHe said with a snort.
Svi listened Shells sound prettyShe said.
Savannah was almost jealous of the other foals as they kept up together while she lagged behind. Her ears were back.
"He gave his life to protect us." Calla murmured, for even though she didn't like Charn's strict ways, she knew he had still loved and cared for them, and had fought to the bitter end to ensure the survival of his daughters. And perhaps it was the contrast between her sire's strict ways and Onok's open chivalry that had so attracted her so completely to this new stallion, and drove her with such passion to defend his honor. "It wouldn't have been natural. King seems too paranoid about predators - wanting to force his own son to stay with him, forbidding anyone from going or coming from his land in fear predators will follow, snapping at and harrying you - it just feels like Dad all over again, and yet you defend King and talk down about dad. I don't understand that."
To Xena Calla raised a confused look, starting to feel dispirited again with all the negativity, "But we did win, why would you say we lost? No one in our herd died, and the cats got pummeled. They are sport hunters - didn't you hear that white cat? She came after us out of vengeance, going after dangerous prey when she could have just taken a deer. And Onok saved us from that. I think you're both just looking for reasons to not like Onok, and I wish you wouldn't because he's trying his best to take care of us, and he's done that so far."
Brennik cantered along side Thor as Daga began to move towards the beach, thoughts of shells beginning to dance through his thoughts. "I bet if we work together, we can find the coolest ones." He offered to his brother, though one ear was tuned back to Zeifer and the others.
Daga had chuckled again at the young foals, his words first going to Zeifer as he tried to encourage the colt, "You know, most girls like it when you show a softer side. Besides, you don't have to be a filly to appreciate the beautiful things in life." And to Svi, he added, "They are, and each one is just a little different than the next."
Onok had slowed and began to follow behind the foals, specifically traveling nearer to Savanah as she lagged behind. Not wanting to point out her flaws, the stallion instead tried to boost her esteem, "Sometimes, moving slower has its benefits." He started out, speaking in a lower voice as if this were some grand secret of the universe, "It allows you to see and pick up on things that others are too hasty to notice. I bet you'll find the most unique shell out of everyone."
She snorted ** king is nothing like father.i don't dislike Onok he just inexperienced** she said Xena snorted ** we lost a deer, so yes we lost. If she was sport hunting calla they wouldn't of taken the deer and left they'd of continued. I don't Dislike Onok. He just started out like an inexperienced colt. The herd is now growing and is safer. King only cares about Kacheska and their foals well being he isn't wrong to worry about predators following back to the herd. ** She said. ** Again this ends this Convo**
Zeifer snorted ** no thank you. Finding shells is for the girls. Colts should be sparring so when we get our own herd we can defend them**
Savannah snorted ** right like any of that matters they'll see all of them first. They can run and kick their feet I couldn't outrun a predator if I had to** she said
Svi ignored her brother as she was interested
Callaquioa shook her head, a physical testament to her disagreeing with Xenarona's perception. She had to acknowledge that she couldn't change their views though, skewed as she believed them to be, and all the bickering was wearing her down. The young mare went silent and stepped along with Xenarona, while turning a frequent ear to her children to make sure they were always near at hoof.
Daga held back a chuckle, though he was still amused by the bravado this youngster displayed, "Sparring isn't a bad idea, you do need to make sure you're well and prepared to fight other stallions and predators." The young buck acknowledged, "But if you really want to attract the mares, you have to balance that power with softness. Mares want a strong protector, but they also want a gentle father for their foals."
"You really think so? Look-" Onok insisted, dropping his massive dial down so that it was next to his daughter. He pointed his muzzle to Brennik, who'd nearly crushed a brilliant purple crocus flower hidden in the grass between clumps of snow as he galloped by. "I don't think he even saw that. But when you take your time and move slower, you can see so much more of the world around you."
Xena lead them to the beach
Kacheska dropped it as she followed
Savannah snorted glancing at the flower ** yet I will be the one the predator goes for while the rest of them can run or I'll be the reason someone gets hurt**
Svi wanted to run on the beach but knew her mother would freak
Zeifer snorted ** that's what grooming is for. I'm not interested in these shells**
Thor didn't really care either but he still looked
Loki was in his own world
The wind that swept in from the ocean carried warmth with it, or at least wasn't as cold as it had been for the past few months. Calla turned her face into it and briefly closed her eyes, taking comfort in the now familiar smell of salt and oceanic aromas. With a heavy breath, she opened her blue sights and pushed away all the negative thoughts that crowded her mind. Her sister was back, she needed to enjoy this time.
"So, what do you think?" Callaquioa asked, turning back to look at Kacheska, eager to see if her sibling had the same reaction she had when seeing the vast, endless stretch of blue that yawned before them.
Onok lifted his head and gave it a hearty shake, "I will always protect you, Savannah. We're a family, and none of us are ever going to leave you behind. You just have to be a little more cautious and aware of your surroundings than your brothers." He spoke, for he didn't want to sugar coat her condition. She would be more vulnerable to predators, and Onok had no idea if she would outgrow her condition, or if it would be stuck with her forever. Either way though, he was determined to keep her safe.
"Grooming is a good option too." Daga conceded with a nod, before an idea came to him. "So maybe shells aren't your thing, but you know what this will help with?" He eyed the colt as they finally reached the beach, letting his question linger for a moment in hopes of gaining the little one's intrigue. "It'll sharpen your eyes. Think about snakes and prairie dog holes - those can be as dangerous as a mountain lion, but it takes a keen eye to spot them. Train your eyes by looking for the best seashell out of thousands on the beach here. Think you can handle that?"
Brennik was already trotting along the beach, nose and whiskers to the sand as he zig zagged about. When one in particular caught his eye, he whispered to Thor, "Hey, Thor! Pssst! Come look at this!"
He snorted ** I already can do that actually my father has taught me I'm not competing looking for lame shells. Have us look for snakes now that would be worth while** he said snorting
Thor moved to look but didn't really care **so?**
Svi was looking around
Savannah snorted ** I should not have to be it's unfair** she refused to pay more attention then her brothers why should she have to work extra hard to survive. Her legs were soon tired and she laid down. ** No point in me participating they'll just get annoyed by the time it takes me to do anything** she snorted laying her head down she knew she wasn't supposed to lie down cause she wouldn't be able to get up fast
Xena enjoyed the breeze
Kacheska gazed out. ** It's just a big body of water it's pretty good much like my home**
"'Pretty good?'" Callaquioa exclaimed in mock dismay, "No, really look at it." The mare insisted, nudging Kacheska before sweeping her her muzzle back to the rippling blue waters. "What do you think is on the other side? Is there another side, or does it just go on forever?" She was beginning to speak with the awe and giddiness of a filly as she drudged up these curiosities.
A short ways from the mares, Brennik was hovered over one shell in particular, a small tan and brown conch. It didn't look particularly remarkable until it shifted and began to move ever so slightly, inching away from where the colt's nose hovered so curiously over it. "There, see!" Brennik gasped, "It moves!"
Onok's voice became soft as he acknowledged the hard truth about nature, "Life isn't fair, my little one." He nudged his heavy muzzle against her side, gently trying to encourage her to get back up, "But how you deal with life's obstacles is what matters. You can lay down and give up before you even begin, and you'll always lose. Or you can prove to the world that your stronger than those obstacles, and succeed."
Daga was dealing with another enthusiastically negative foal, but the young buck wasn't defeated yet. When his first two ploys failed to engage Zefeir, he pulled out a third trick from his proverbial sleeve. "It's too cold for snakes, they're still hibernating. Shells will have to do - and look at that." He turned his antler-less head to where Thor and Brennik were, "I think they've already found one. Are you really going to let them beat you so easily? If your father trained you so well, prove it to them."
He snorted **Thier pansies I refuse to find stupid shells. It's not worth my time. They can't beat me at something I'm not participating** he said with a snort. **They should be sparring or going around the territory with their father**
Savannah ears go back and she doesn't move. ** Then I'm weak and choose to give up no one want a mare who can't keep up with a herd anyways**
Kacheska** so?** She said calmly.
Xena sighed. One ear back on her daughter.
Thor looked at the shell before moving to find his own
Svi was nudging at shells
Callaquioa looked back to her sister with a note of confusion. She at first opened her maw to question her, but ultimately dropped it when Kacheska seemed not to share any interest with her. Giving a wistful sigh, Calla looked back out to the water and pondered quietly on the many unknowns that so intrigued her.
Brennik was left in much the same conundrum when his brother showed no interest in the curiosity he'd come across. Unlike his mother though, Brennik was determined to share his find with someone, and after checking Zeifer and Loki off the list, his sights set on Sviper. He might have gotten off on the wrong hoof with one cousin, but maybe this would help mend that frayed bridge with Zeifer's sister. "Pssst, hey Svi! Come check this out." He nickered to her, pawing his hoof in the air just above the shell that had abruptly stopped moving.
Even more determined, Onok gave his daughter a slow but hearty nudge. It was powerful enough that she'd have to get up on her legs to avoid being bowled over, yet gentle enough that she wouldn't get hurt either way. "Now, none of that my Savannah. Chin up." The big stallion coached, "You have every right to feel upset, but I won't let you wallow in it. Up you go."
"Mhhh, that's too bad..." Daga murmured while shaking his head, stilling trying to lure the colt into having fun, "I've already counted you in, and it'd be a shame for you to come in last place because you don't have an eye for finding shells. Look at that, I think Brennik has already found one." He started to step away from Zeifer, moving in the general direction of the other foals. "You've all got a few more minutes!"
he glared at the Deer Well too damn bad deer im not in you can't force me to do something I don't want toHe said glaring at him . He stomped a hoof I don't care what he found im not participating and I can't loose something im not pathetic deer thinking you have any right to say im participating in something im nothe was angry now. I am not in last place im not in any place you take it back stagHe snorted. He lipped at his mother and grunted. his head held high. If we competeing it should be sparring for the boys now that a true competitionHe said. Let me know when you have something worth while to place. Mom can we just go home this is boring and someone trying to force me to do something is so not coolHe said as he moved away to his mother to grab a drink.
Savanah let him rolling over then looked at Daga No we need an hour cause I can't find something for an hour so unfair choose something else for us to do that doesn't require movement or time limitShe snorted at the stag. See no one cares no one takes me into considerationShe screamed as she laid back down.
Svi had picked up a really pretty swirly shell when Brennik spoke. Though she did glance at Daga as he tried to force her brother into competeing and coming at last. She put her shell down. My brother is right stag you can't force him to competeShe then picked hers up and moved to Brennik staring at what ever it was.
Xena heard her daughter and her ears go back she wished she could do something for her but she didn't know what.
Kacheska wasn't really one for thse sands. She sighed as Zeifer spoke. zeifer calm down Daga I am sorry but they are right you have no right to say thatShe said. If Zeifer doesn't want to participate then he is not participating and you are not allowed to say he coming in last that is rudeShe did nip her son for some of his choice words though.
An innocent attempt at getting Zeifer to play turned unexpectedly sour when he ran to his mother to complain, leaving Daga a little shell-shocked when not only his mother but his sister chimed in to verbally attack him. He blinked in surprise and took a quiet breath, "Easy guys, I was only trying to help him have fun, I didn't think anyone would take that seriously." He explained at length, feeling like he might need to walk on eggshells around these Toklat horses. "If he doesn't want to participate in the game, that's okay, no harm done." The stag moved further away from Kacheska and her child, and began to inspect what the other foals had found so far.
As Daga walked near Svi he spoke quietly to her, "That was my mistake, I thought it would encourage him to play." Dark brown eyes scanned over the shell that she had found and shown in a smile, "That's a very nice one you have there. It might even be a winning shell, who knows?" From there he continued on to Loki and Thor, casually checking on their progress.
Brennik mentally rolled his eyes at Zeifer's continued whining but knew better to say anything. He instead waited for Svi to approach and tossed his head excitedly when she drew near. "Just stay still, and watch." He encouraged with quiet anticipation, and sure enough, the shell began to inch forward and move across the beach. Slow but steady, the little conch wobbled and tottered and scooted across the ground. "See! I didn't know shells could move, but this one does! Wanna share it? I bet we'll both win if we do."
"Savannah, darling-" Onok said patiently, using a delicate touch of the hoof to nudge her again, to force the filly to keep using her legs if she wanted to stay upright, "You can't lay down and refuse to play, and then complain that the game isn't fair. Remember what I said about being strong? Neither ten minutes nor an hour matters if you spend that time laying down and feeling sorry for yourself." His words were as soft as his touch, not wanting to upset his daughter, but knowing that coddling her would do nothing to help her survive as an adult.
She got back up. it doesn't matter I can't find a good shell in the time limit he set period the end and he knows this this is catared to them. and none of them careShe said.
Loki had found a smallish shell with a pink color to it.
Thor was side tracked by a rabbit he was sniffing toward.
Zeifer stayed wit hhis mother.
Kacheska sighed I know it wasn't your intention but telling him he comes in last place because you said he is participating that is forcing someoneShe said softly.
Svi sighed Fun for him is racing or sparring. forcing him into something isn't right, the adults say my father is unfair by trying to protect us the way he does well if that true what you said is the sameShe said as she picked her shell up. When the one Brennik was showing her moved her nostrils flared as she dropped her own and moved back .I ain't touching that! She esclaimed in nervousness.
"There you go." He encouraged when she stayed on her feet this time. "Come, the more you stand here pointing your hoof at others, the less time you have to find just the right shell." He took a slow step forward, deflecting her accusations as he didn't want to encourage that kind of behavior. "The world isn't out to get you, you need to get that out of your head. Here, how about this one? I don't think I've seen one like that before." Onok used a hoof to nudge a small sand dollar, half buried in the pebbles.
"Good eye, Loki. That's got a nice splash of color to it." Daga praised, then chuckled when he saw what Thor was up to. "Thor, I don't know if that counts as a shell." And when Kacheska and Svi continued to harry him, he answered them simply, "I truly apologize that I upset you all, I won't make that mistake again." He honestly hadn't meant anything other than to use a bit of reverse psychology on the youngster, but had grossly underestimated how sensitive Kacheska and her children were, and was mindful to tread more carefully next time.
Brennik was giggling now, and shying back when Svi spooked at the shell's movement. "It is kinda spooky, isn't it?" His giggled died away and a mischievous grin took the colt. Feeling a bit of bravado take him, Brennik reach down and grasped the conch between his teeth and tilted his head at Svi, "L'k, I 'ot th' cree- eeeee!" His little prank ended in a shrill scream when something poked his lip and made him drop the shell. This was his first experience with a hermit crab, which Svi might have caught a glimpse of if she happened to be looking before Brennik dropped it and bolted...
She snorted yes it is im not meant ot live its quiet clear on thatShe said with a snort and glared at the sand dollar.not like i have any timeShe said grabbing the thing in her mouth.
Kacheska just let Zeifer Nurse. we'll go home soonShe said.
Svi stumbled back as the little thing pinched Brennik.leave it alone its a creatureShe squealed through her mouthful
Loki was pleased with his find.
Thor snorted But its much more intersting then a shellHe said.
"Now, now, none of that." Onok insisted, "The only person you can be mad at right now is yourself, for giving up before you even started playing." He took another few, slow steps towards the rhythmically lapping waves, trying to encourage his daughter to keep moving along the beach, if only for a few more feet. "We still have a minute or two left, and you have a set of beautiful eyes that work just fine."
All eyes flashed to Brennik's location when the colt cried out, with Daga being the first to assure a very worried Callaquioa and the rest that there was no danger, "No need to panic, I think the children just discovered... ah yes." The buck had sprinted over to confirm his find, "It's just a small crab. You okay, Brennik?" He asked, figuring it was the colt's pride that was hurt more than his lip.
Brennik had sprinted all the way to his mother, where he stood crowded against the mare until his panic subsided. "I-I'm fine!" He blurted out, trying to regain some of the ego he'd just lost. Callaquioa nuzzled her son's forehead, standing protectively against him. When Kacheska murmured to Zeifer, an ear flicked in her direction, "Leaving so soon?" There was no hiding the sorrow in her words, though Kacheska and her son had seemed unhappy since the moment she stepped hoof in the terrain, and she wasn't entirely surprised by the other's comment.
Daga looked out at the various contestants, noting that three had actually participated, along with a quasi-attempt by Savannah, and an outright refusal by Zeifer and Coltrane. Thor had at least started off strong before getting distracted. The young buck thanked his stars he wasn't typically in charge of the children, for he could only handle so much of this! He tilted his head up and called out after a moment, "Alright, have your last look around and bring your best shell to me! We'll see who the winner is, and what prize they get."
She snorted There shouldn't be a time limit that is unfairShe said through holding the stupid sand dollar. If she lost well that was because this was a biased game like usual. She went up to Daga and dropped the shell your time limits are wrong it is unfair to set a time limitShe said with a snort. If she lost she would refuse to play any of Daga games. =
Kacheska Unless you want King on your door stepShe said calmly.
Loki just stuck with his current shell.
Svi also stuck with hers.
Onok slowed and came to a stop, letting Savannah complain and fret over her shell. He couldn't do anything to change her attitude right now, but she was up and moving, and that was his main goal for right now. After all, he didn't want to push her too hard just yet on life lessons; this was just one of many that should would have to trial, and he was glad she at least participated in the end and got her legs moving.
Now it was Daga's turn to handle the dour little filly, and he did it with the same skill that he'd used with Zeifer, "That's a very interesting shell you found there Savannah, good job. I'm happy you decided to join us in the end." He gave her a little nod before looking to the other contestants and the variety of shells they brought in, offering each foal a compliment. Brennik was forced the scramble back down the beach, hastily grabbing and depositing a fractured clam shell as his choice, having decided not to touch the hermit crab's home again.
Callaquioa was watching the foals, but her thoughts were with her sister. The mare frowned lightly, "I wish you would stay, but I understand if you want to go back. I just hope that King doesn't cause a ruckus over it, I do miss you and mom."
Further down the beach, Daga was looking over the shells, putting on a bit of a show as he murmured and commented on the little trinkets the foals had brought to him. After a few moments of this the stag lifted his head and looked with great importance at the gathered little ones, "You all did a fine job, I can tell that you've got keen perception and sharp eyes. It was a very difficult decision, as you all brought some great shells, but the winner is..." His dark eyes scanned the gathered faces, once more letting his words linger for dramatic effect, "Svripa! Congratulations, you're the winner of the contest, and your prize is a title. From now on, until we play again and someone else wins, you are the Queen of the SunSet Beaches."
"Awww, man." Brennik relented with a snort, his ears tilting down with disappointment. Getting over that quickly enough, he swished his little tail and bowed his bald face to Svripa, giving her an excited giggle as he went along with the game for the fun of it, "I guess I owe you a congratulations, Queen Svripa."
She listened and snorted stupid she not a queen of our beach. I am you only chose hers cause she not from here. And I had no time. You always pick something I can't do or keep up with always. she said. She glared now my shell is better hers is so common it's not funny she said she turned and took off purposefully stepping and crushing svi shell as she ran as fast as her weak legs could carry her away from all of them she stumbled and fell multiple times but she was determine to run away. She has never won any games daga had come up for them. Thor Loki or brennik always won and now an intruder won. Typical.
Kacheska sighed I can't and you know it she said calmly. It wouldn't be right of her to stay not with kings foals.
Loki and Thor congrats her then frowned at savannah anger.
Svi smiled **thank you** she said then backed up a bit at savannah outbursts
Callaquioa watched as Savannah stormed off, followed hastily by their lead stallion. She might have been compelled to step in and assist, but she figured Onok could handle this one while she spent what precious little time she had left with her sister. "But what do you want? Don't think about what King or any of the others want for you - what do you want, Kacheska?"
"Hey!" Brennik at first snorted this at Savannah for her outburst and the shell she deliberately crushed. As his sister stormed off, he turned apologetically to Sviper, and explained in simple terms as children were want to do, "Sorry about my sis, sometimes she gets real moody about things. Her legs don't work as well as ours, so I think that's why she gets grumpy like this." And as mad as he was at Savannah for her behavior, she was still his sister, and after a moment of watching her trip and stumble, he galloped after Onok.
Onok had little trouble keeping up with his disabled daughter, "Savanah, you need to stop." He commanded, his voice light but commanding. Once he had caught up, he stepped in front of her, using his body to try and end her escape. "I know you're upset, but sometimes you are your own worst enemy. You keep telling yourself everything is unfair and you can't do this and that... and it becomes a reality for you." Onok folded his legs beneath him, bringing his massive bulk down closer to Savannah's level, "Now, you need to go back and apologize to Svripa for breaking her shell."
Brennik had caught up at this point, trotting up to his half-sister. "Hey, you okay Savanah? Next time, I can team up with you and we can find the best shell together, if you want?"
She didn't get up this time ** no it was unfair he set a time limit. Time limit should of been when the sun began to set** she snorted she didn't look at her brother** not next time no this time. Daga can correct this. It's his fault. He always comes up with games I can't do or sets an impossible time. I'm not playing games that aren't fair. He knew I'd need more time but didn't give it** she snorted as she just laid there refusing to get up now. **And teaming means you win too ** she said with a snort. She'd apologize only when daga changed his answer or say they are starting over with sunset as the time limit. Sure it wasn't svi she was mad at. It was daga.
Kacheska**what I want you don't want I want our herds to live side by side. Not so far from each other that will make visits like this impossible**
Xena watched her daughter it painted her to know savannah was struggling.
"You're pointing your hoof at others again." Onok reminded his daughter with a stern look, "Was it Daga's fault that you laid down and refused to play until there was little time left? This was a game about using your eyes, not your legs - you had an equal shot just like everyone else, that's why Daga picked it instead of the sparring game that Zeifer wanted." He ruffled his snout against her pale mane, an affectionate touch. "Now, now. You know Daga goes out of his way to pick games that are fair to you, you need to get out of this rut you're in. You've got a smart mind, and sharp senses. Sure, your legs may not be so strong yet, but look at everything else that is wonderful about you, and focus on those strengths."
"It doesn't have to." Brennik offered hopefully at the sidelines, his little tail swishing uncertainly, "I could be like your sidekick or something? Like help you find the best shell, but you turn it in so you would win instead of me. I don't want to be Queen of the Sunset Beach anyway."
Callaquoia sighed, "I do wish we lived closer together." But she knew as well as Kacheska that it likely wouldn't happen, for Onok was settled on keeping this land, and Calla herself had grown quite partial to it. "What about having a rendezvous site, where our herds could gather? Like out in the prairie, or the marsh?"
She snorted **it's not my fault my legs were tired from all the walking** she said and it was the truth. ** It wasn't fair he should of said resting first for a good half hour. I can't find a shell I can't walk to so yes it involved moving they would get to all the shells before me. Would of been fair if I had been given a headstart** she said** sure but we do it today that round didn't count** she snorted it had to be with more then Loki Thor and brennik. However she wouldn't let this slide.** There is nothing good about me no stallion is going to want a mare who can't fight. Who has to lie down to sleep and hell I probably won't be able to have my own foal when I get older** she snorted
Kacheska snorted ** won't work too many chances of predators** she said** the prairie has a big cat pride**
When Savannah diverted to excuses, Onok was quick to nip that in the bud too, "You gave up before you started, honey. You can't refuse to play and then blame others and make excuses after excuse for yourself. When it comes to the real world-" He swept his broad head to the meadows and forests around them, "-the world will not care for such things. You have to be responsible for your own actions. This was only a game, what if it was a life and death situation? You can't just lie down and complain to the wolf that you're too tired to run or fight. You have to take charge of yourself." He nuzzled the top of her head now, "And don't be silly, you're a beautiful little filly, and you're grow up to be a beautiful mare as well. You just need to work a little harder than the others and strengthening your legs, okay? Don't give up so easily. Focus on what strengths you do have."
Callaquioa nodded slowly, "I'll leave that up to you and King then. We'll always be here for you to visit if you want."
When he nipped her for telling the truth.** It's the truth not an excuse** she said **you forget I won't be able to run or fight a wolf. It is pointless to even try** she snorted. She made to get up** if daga isn't redoing this then I'm out** she then attempted to start running again while her father was still down. Daga was unair to her . Now like usual she lost a game. ** Your wrong no stallion will want me** she said as she stumbled and wobbled away from the others.
Kacheska just nodded at this point.
"No excuses." Onok held firm. If he couldn't get her to take responsibility for herself and properly put effort into survival, he feared she wouldn't live long. Even with he and Harthrou, and two steadfast stags to look out for her, disaster was always one careless mistake away.
The filly was suddenly scrambling to her hooves and bolting off again, only this time Brennik was galloping along at her side, keeping easy pace with his shorter-limbed sibling. "Savannah, wait!" He called out, "Forget about stupid stallions, you can just stay here and live with me and the herd when you're bigger!" He suggested naively, still too young to have any desire for his own mares or to start his own family. At his young age, the life was all about playing, eating, and napping. "I wouldn't let any wolves eat you."
It took a moment for Onok to shift his large body upwards, but it didn't take long for the young stallion to catch up Brennik and Savannah. Soon, he was trotting dutifully behind his two children. "Where are you going, Savannah?" Onok would let her run a bit and perhaps cool down before engaging her again, but if she happened to veer in a dangerous direction or strayed too far from the others he would be quick to intercept her.
Savannah hated life, she hated Daga he always did things against her. She never won because they were always games that required too much movement or timed. This had been no different. right live here never have my own foal never get to actually enjoy life. Never be able to defend myself, always needing someone to defend me. That a weak lifeShe snorted. She snorted what does it matter where I go. You shouldn't care im nothing but weak and worthless and everyone plays games I cannot play or have trouble playing Daga is biased and inconsiderate. No one actually caresShe said with a snort. She just kept stumbling and running trying to make her legs work like her siblings worked. Her ears were back.
Onok continued steadily after, still making sure that they were within view of the rest of the herd, and near enough that he could hear and respond if the others needed help. That left Brennik the task of trying to console his sister, and he did so with enthusiastic determination, "Who wants foals to deal with? You'd just have to stand there and feed them all the time, and that's no fun." The colt reasoned with continued naivety, "Plus, I can teach you how to defend yourself! We can practice kicking and stuff." Brennik puffed his chest out a bit and raised his dial high, "Also, I care about you. And I'd beat up any stallion who said they didn't like you because you're weak."
She snorted ** I know how to defend myself I just physically can't and I do I want a foal when I'm older. If I'm not having a foal there no point for me to grow up. I'll be nothing but a useless body. ** She said. She collapsed as her legs gave out. ** I won that game svi didn't daga was just lying to suck up to her. She must be informed of this. Yes. Daga was only doing it to suck up to her** she snorted
Onok trotted ahead of his children as Savannah finally wore herself and laid down, and began to graze a few feet away with an ear tuned to the pair.
"Well that's why we'd train, silly." Said Brennik when Savannah lamented on her weakness. "The more you run and the more grass you eat, the bigger and stronger you'll get!" When it came to Svi and Daga though, Brennik was a little torn on his steadfast defense of his sibling. He dug a forehoof absently at the ground as he stood beside her, "Well, I don't know about that, I mean her shell was really pretty. Definitely prettier than mine and Thor's, and probably Loki's too. Yours was super cool, but it wasn't as shiny and colorful as hers?" This was his attempt to rationalize Daga's decision, for he was also disappointed at not winning the title.
She snorted ** none of that has helped yet and it's not going to! ** She snorted then she snorted ** here was white like the one I had, mine was cooler as it's uncommon and hers you see all over. So no hers was second place** she said** she can't go home thinking she won it's wrong** her ears were back. ** I've trained as much as you three so no it's obviously not training I can't do any of that and will never be able to I'll always be dependent**
His ears went back as he met her frustrations with constructive thought, trying to find some way to help his sister. After a moment his little auds perked back up and he beamed mischievously at her, "You know what we could do..." He glanced at Onok, who was absolutely close enough to hear them, but pretended he wasn't paying attention. The colt lowered his voice nonetheless, "When they go home, lets search the beach for the best shells, then we'll hide them in places only we know about. Then, the next time they come back, we can ask to play the shell game again... and then you'll win because you'll know right where the best shells are!" He then shook his head, "And don't worry about the training stuff, we'll work on that. Plus, we could go talk to the deer and see what they eat - their legs are super long, so I bet if we eat some of their foods, that'll help your legs catch up."
She snorted **no I won this time and imma make sure everyone knows it. And I doubt they'll be back thier father from what I heard is super protective. Daga will right this before they leave** she said with a snort. She loved her siblings but they just didn't understand that her disability couldn't be changed as much as she love for it to. She wasn't going to wait for a second game of shells either she won this won or this one was null and void. **Daga can either correct the winner or call this round null that it will have to be redone with time limit of sunsetting** she snorted **we can't eat what the deer eat**
"But Savannah-" Brennik started, glancing back uncertainly at the young stag and other foals further on down the beach, "You were kinda mean to Svripa and Daga, and if you go back and want to take her title away and complain to him, they may not want to play with you anymore. Sometimes it's better just to be a good sport about it?"
Onok's attention shifted between the foals to his surroundings. He knew the recovering Nightshade was out there helping, but having Kacheska here put him on edge, purely for the fact that King and Majesty wouldn't be happy if they discovered her gone.
She snorted**daga mean to me so I be mean back. He can fix this by either saying this round didn't count or saying I won. Her she'll was common shell not unique at all so he lied** she snorted as she now got up intending on making daga do one of the two.
King was on his way but wouldn't be there for another hour
"Well..." Brennik drew out, still conflicted on wanting to support Savannah, but worried the path she was going down wasn't best for her in the end. "I think maybe you're just taking it all a little too hard? Like I think Daga was trying to be nice by making a game for all of us, and... well, you just laid down and didn't play for most of it?" He was too young to realize that Daga had actually started the game to help corral the foals while the adults argued, but either way, he'd enjoyed the little event.
The bald-faced colt trotted right after his sister, while Onok lumbered at an easy pace behind them. "That's not going to happen, Savannah." Deep and simply spoken, the stallion's voice had Brennik dropping his head a little. "The first thing you will do is apologize to Svripa for breaking her shell." He hated seeing his little daughter upset like this, but on a deeper level than Brennik, knew that her current attitude and outlook on life would only lead her to more misery later down the road if it wasn't corrected now.
She snorted** I had to my legs were hurting** she said. ** I'll apologize for that but she didn't win fairly. So either daga starts the game over or says that no one won** she said as she moved toward the group. It wasn't her fault daga was inconsiderate and didn't give her enough time nor her fault he was sucking up to svi because of his mistake with zeifer.
"Savannah." There was an undertone of warning in his gentle voice, "Daga won't be restarting the game." This was also said loudly enough for the young buck to hear, an indirect instruction for Daga to heed. "I know that you're struggling, and I wish I could fix that, but I can't. What I can do is help you learn how to cope with it, and keep you safe while you learn. One of those lessons is that you can't lay down and complain about everyone else and give up on yourself - if you do that, you lose every time, just like today." He paired his heavy words with another soft nudge, this time against her shoulder, akin to a father patting a hand against their child in support. "Today wasn't your day, but learn from this and you can do better tomorrow."
Having heard most of this, Daga offered a friendly smile to Savannah. "Would you like to play a game tomorrow? How about you decide what we play, and what the prize is?"
Brennik pranced up beside Savannah, eyes dancing eagerly between the deer and his sister. He was always happy to take part in a game, and determined next time to stick by his sister's side if she wanted him there.
She ignored her father now ** no declare today's game as no one won. She won't be here tomorrow. You chose her to make up for what you said to zeifer. So either we play a new game right now or yo admit your mistake and declare no one a winner. I didn't loose that game** she said she looked to svi ** I am sorry I broke your shell but you didn't win fairly so the game is null** she said calmly. Her nostrils flare.. let alone there wasn't a true game she could play that would be fair as is not one she could think of
Svi listened** I accept your apology. ** She said. **And your right my shell is common as I found another exactly like it**
She did wonder now from finding the similar shell of savannah was actually right about dagas choice
"Thank you for apologizing, Savannah." Onok started honestly, before shifting to a firmer tone, "But there will be no new shell game today. And you won't continue to harass Daga; he was nice enough to host a game for all of you, and you know he always plays fair." He had seen the shells as well, and though Svripa's was a common enough piece, it was still unique amongst those gathered by the other foals, and Onok could see why his cervid friend had picked it.
Brennik sighed heavily and turned an unpleasant look to Zeifer when his sister tried to defend him. He still wasn't fond of the other colt, finding him too winy and meek to play with the others, but he dared not say anything lest the other foals turn on him again. Hefting a quieter sigh, the foal turned his sights to Loki, to see what his sibling was up to.
Daga didn't dare go against Onok's orders. He wouldn't have minded starting a new game, and wasn't bothered by Savannah's false accusations, but the young deer didn't want to stand in the way of a lesson to be learned. "My offer still stands for tomorrow." He offered hopefully, trying to offset some of the tension with the promise of new fun tomorrow.
Svi snorted **actually if she wants to do it again i don't mind my shell wasn't unique anyways I shouldn't of won her's was better** Svi was always a good sport. And she understood Savannah she could see her issue. **or if they still won't startt a new game Savannah you won not me your the queen of the beach**SHe said calmly. Her ears flick then.
Savannah snorted **it wasn't fair he should of said the game starts in 30 minutes to let my leg rest** She then looked at svi liking her more now. Well she didn't not like her before hand however before she could say anything she too heard the call. Another Stallion.
Kacheska heard him. Shoot she stayed too long.
Zeifer heard his father but heard the anger in his voice. **Dads mad**
King didn't care to wait at the border as he sent out a call as he headed down a well torn path.
"Thank you Svripa, that's very kind of you." Onok praised the little filly, before turning to his daughter to offer her a final remark on her behavior, "My word is final on this, no new game tonight. I love you dearly Savannah, but you need to learn how to cope with your issues better. Next time, instead of laying down and complaining and being mean to Daga, you could ask nicely for more time. Now-"
Twin auds perked at the roar of a call that came from the mountains. He called back in a hearty roar himself. "Stay together, everyone. We'll meet him in the upper meadow." Onok ordered as he began to move up the beach to the field where they'd initially been grazing this morning.
Calla nickered for her foals to come to her as she crowded in near to Onok, following him up into the meadow. Brennik hastily followed them.
Daga discretely retreated back to the forest, where Nightshade was currently ruminating. He'd help keep an eye on things, but wanted to remain out of sight so as not to get tangled in equine affairs unless needed.
Harthrou finally responded as well, though he wasn't eager to join with the herd just yet. Still awkward and isolated, the curly-eared stallion trailed the others at a distance.
