Julia and Darkfur

Julia sat with her knees up in the grasses, the heaving lump of fur warm next to her. Her hazel eyes drifted down to it, and saw Darkfur breathing heavily in her sleep. Reaching out a smooth hand, she stroked the black fur. It was comforting her. She kind of felt like they were invincible and nothing could get to them. Ever since she had found the wolf whom she named Darkfur, they had protected each other and cared for each other, not there was much to protect from. They were usually in hiding. Julia didn't know why, but something was telling her that other humans wouldn't like the friendship she had with the wolf.

Darkfur was awake while Julia stroked her fur, it was just she didn't want the human to stop. Suddenly she tensed as she heard a rustle of movement. A quiet warning bark, and she heard Julia crouch down and her breathing reduced to minimum. Darkfur lay as still as she could. Whoever it was was still here. Almost as suddenly as it had appeared, the rustling faded away. And Darkfur breathed out the breath she hadn't realised she was holding. She would stay awake while Julia slept, to keep an eye out, and would wake her friend if she heard any signs of trouble.
