Retti
A young adult Cardinal, Northern, to be exact, was floating upon the wind, with not a care in the world. Each time he drifted near the tips of the tall grasses, he would flap his wings a few quick times and send his brilliant red body skyward again, to prevent any sudden crashes. His beady dark eyes were lightly shut as he hummed himself a tune, known by many Cardinals where he originally came from. But then his eyes opened, and he began to chirp a new song, simple, yet with the gracefulness of a calm stream. His long tail feathers were blown up and down by the gentle winds, which were actually a bit stronger to his small bird shape.
This little bird usually preferred the dense thickets and other areas, closer to forest zones, but he wanted something different this time. Not to hide under the cover of treetops. He loved the brightly colored blades of grass; nearly all of it held his same hue. He continued to easily fly through the air, about 10 or so feet from the tips of grass, to assure himself that he wouldn't become the quick and easy meal for an unexpected preditor. No, he was smarter than that. A wolf or something could simply run by and catch him in their mouth. He wasn't too worried though; his little song was soothing to him and calmed his restless spirit.
Kraai & Clan
The raven was off by himself once more, taking leave of his murder in search of something... entertaining. His sharp mind needed something to work on, or something to learn. Anything to assauge the boredom he felt.
Glossy black wings carried him high above the ground as his sharp, beady eyes scanned the grassy terrain below. His sight was incredibly keen, and it didn't take long to spot the cardinal cruising along a short distance away. Kraai was a bit surprised to see the red bird this far out in the open, but knew that he too enjoyed new scenery now and then.
The falcon-sized bird arched his flight and began to sail downward towards Retti. As he drew near, the bird's smooth lyrics came to Kraai. He enjoyed listening to the songbirds, and often wished he too could sing the way he did. However, he'd never wish to give up his ability to mock the humans; it was always fun to yell their strange words back at them and see what kind of response he got.
"Why, hello there." Kraai called out, after falling in to the side of Retti, flapping his large wings in quick, heavy beats to keep his form aloft.
Retti
Retti had continued to sing to himself, calm and collected. I may just make myself doze off... he thought to himself as he flapped and sent himself higher into the air, enjoying the breezes as they lightly ruffled his feathers.
He was about to begin a new song when he heard a voice. He looked to his side, where a black colored bird was flying alongside him. He had to say he was a bit startled, yet didn't show it. Only his dark eyes widened a bit, but not much. They couldn't open too much farther to begin with.
Retti scanned the raven warily, though seen no threat from him. "Hello there to you." he chirped back in a happy tone, quite relieved that he appeared to be friendly. He could, of course, deal with a naughty bird on his own, but it was best if he didn't fight against his own kind, black or red or blue, or even some of those multicolored birds he had even heard stories about. They probably didn't live around here, though. Retti was a bit sad because of that. He wouldn't have minded meeting one. But in the meantime, he simply continued to fly, waiting for the raven's next words. Retti seemed to always be up for a conversation.
Kraai
Kraai gave his head a slight bob, being careful not to throw himself off balance in the act. "If I were a hungry kestrel, I might have picked you right out of the sky while you sang." He laughed, his voice not carrying any threat or mock in it. "So, you just enjoying the day? It's not often I see your kind cruising the plains." Kraai was always hungry for information. His murder consisted of the Aandag clan, who mostly stayed near the bluffs of the Croal Mountains and the Breve Ridges. But Kraai was one for wondering around, talking to any creature who'd give him the time.
"Oh, I'm Kraai-Arvinru-Aandag by the way. Kraai for short." The raven added, giving his full name first. It was tradition amongst most of the Valley's ravens and crows to have their clan as part of their name, among other things.
Retti
Retti continued to flap, chuckling at the raven's words. "I wouldn't be too sure about such a sneak attack." he stated, nodding the best he could without sending his body up or down in the process. He sighed, legs folded in neatly to his lower belly. "I am enjoying the day; a lot, actually. My kind doesn't just stay in thickets and heavily wooded areas; we sometimes prefer the edges and some of the openness. I like the thickets best, I must say." he then said, but suddenly he felt his stomach growl at him, and shuddered. "Hmm, would you happen to know a place to find seeds? Or maybe fruit? I'm really hungry right now. I'de eat some insects but I don't feel up to finding them." he then stated. His belly felt like a big baloon full of air. He realized he hadn't eaten in quite a while, but he didn't know where to find any good feed around here. Bugs would be incredibly hard to get in the tall grasses, or he could go elsewhere, but that may mean abandoning his new "friend." He looked at the raven with a brief glance before focusing on the land before him, making sure he stayed on the wind. He hoped this bird knew of a place to get this kind of food. He was intent on eating sonme fruit the most, but decided to not add anything about it.
Kraai
Kraai gazed over the horizon as he listened to Retti's words. Here and there, he could see other birds flitting through the grasses are sailing high overhead. Luckily no raptors yet. "I'm not much for the seeds, but the fruit part I can help with. There's a human place a bit south from here. Tons of brambles and sumac along the edge of their yard, and the raspberries are ripe now." Kraai replied thoughtfully, "They've got feeders too; plenty of seeds."
Kraai dove down suddenly as a cicada droned by, its wings rattling like a snake's tail, loud and monotonous in the heavy air. The large bug swerved and dropped like a rock from the sky, narrowly avoiding becoming the raven's snack. Kraai pulled up from his dive with a loud caw, expression his frustration, "Moving targets... I feel like eating something that wouldn't run away from me. What'd say we check out that human place?"
Retti
Retti listened intently, pretty glad that this bird knew of a place to get this kind of food. He nodded some more, throwing his wings a bit off balance, but caught himself in the end.
"Wow... I bet I could get plump enough for a hibernation if I wanted to." he stated with a chuckle, then watched as the raven swooped down after a flying bug. He watched as Kraai's attempt to catch it missed by not much, and then his attention was focused completely on the other bird again. "I would enjoy heading over there, especially right now." he stated, feeling even hungrier now that they were talking about food. He flapped a bit harder, waiting to see if the raven wanted to go to this food bearing place now or later.
Kraai
"Ah, that you could. You're lucky too, because the humans seem to enjoy feeding the songbirds in winter." Kraai pointed out as he shifted his wings and altered his direction. Now he was heading south, "It's not too far off. Just... watch out for cats."
The sleek black bird gained some alitude now, wanting to have a good vantage point when he entered the human terra. No need to get caught off guard by a hungry feline.
